Recent lens pricing ...
So ... i figured I'd do a little window shopping, at B&H Video ... and ran through the three primary lenses in my list of "have to haves" ... and here's the result as of 1/15/2009
TAMRON SP AF 17-50mm f/2.8 XR Di-II LD Aspherical (IF) ............ $399
TAMRON SP AF 28-75mm f/2.8 XR Di LD Aspherical (IF) MACRO ..... $349
TAMRON SP AF 70-200mm f/2.8 Di LD (IF) MACRO ...................... $619
Totaling out at .................................................. ............... $1,367
Folks, that is a whole lot less than I paid only a year ago. You round these three out and you have a real fighting chance, indoors and out. It beats the heck out of dealing with f/4-glass.
Add in an A700 ($999) and you have a real deal at less than $2400. Heck, an A900 with NO lenses costs you $3000!
Now, this is my idea of a "kit!"

Dang Don remember how much waiting and how trouble we had making the score on the Tamron 70-200mm and what we paid for them!! But I guess I would much rather of got the lens when I did instead of getting it now at a 'deal' If only that 200-500 would ease down a bit.

Woah, $619? Are you for realls? man.... I paid list price at Amazon. I didn't think lens prices dropped.... guess that doesn't hold too firmly for Tamron.
B&H is sold out though.
Adorama is still at $699.

What was list price at Amazon? Don and I both popped more then the current Adorma price!! And then I went and put a Hoya SMC UV filter on the front of mine. it all works out in the long run, I got my 50mm at a very good price, and I got a really good buy on my Tokina 80-400.

Be happy dr4gon, prices will recover when the economy improves. May take a while but the lens will still be the same. Now, might be a good time to look out for a bargain.

Well, I'm all for lens prices dropping.... just before I buy them instead of after
It's cool though, I know how the cycle goes... lol

Actually, it is a little strange ... seeing the prices drop on lenses that really don't need a price drop. The ones that do ... haven't moved ... and they are still coming in, priced a mile high.
