Shooting the Maxxum 5000

A few notes, results, and questions on this camera, which is probably old enough to buy beer. I know this is the Sony forum, but more than anything, putting a couple of rolls of film through this Maxxum is to teach me more about how to better use my Alpha. I don't intend to use this a lot, but basically got it for free with a few lenses I wanted. I have not used a film camera since I was a lot less interested in photography, so I know very little about film.

So my first question is about the color. They came out quite yellow. I think I'm using Fuji 400 indoor/outdoor film. Most of these were indoors, does that mean I'm supposed to be using some sort of filter to get the color right?

Here are some samples. None are good shots, I was just having some fun, trying to burn through the roll.

I'm a little embarrassed for my wife's UNC diploma to be on the wall, but give her a break, everybody makes mistakes.


Can you tell I'm enjoying the ability to shoot with a shallow depth of field?

Second is a button on the back I can't figure out. It says "BLC." It's the only button on the whole camera I haven't figured out. It's right above the thumb grip, I think I've seen that this is where the exposure lock is on some of the other Maxxums.

Third, I threw the Sony 18-70 kit lens on it, and I was surprised by the results. I am sure there is a lot of corner fall off, but there was only vignetting at the widest settings, seemed like 22 or so and above the lens was usable.

the kit-lens is a DT lens so it can't be used on FF cameras.

I guess I didn't state it well enough... I was surprised at how WELL it worked, or that it worked at all, because I know DT lenses are not designed for FF.

Very nice pics! Are you scanning them in with some special film/negative slide scanner? You're making me want to shoot a roll in an AE-1. I don't really have any way of digitizing them though.

To "digitize" them, you scan the negative with a "neg" scanner. I use the HP 4850 ... which is a standard desktop scanner that has one built into the top. After you place the five-shot film strip in the scanner lid, you import the image into Photoshop. You then have complete digital control over the image. It's pretty cool. The scanner is cheap enough ... lens than a lens.

If it was only 10 years earlier I'd be setting up a film scanner, and probably a darkroom, but for now, it's just not worth it.

There were actually a few pictures in that roll that I took with the 18-70 DT, and they didn't need cropping at all... I just don't remember which. Seems like there is something wrong with the EXIF data on these pictures.

This doesn't deserve it's own thread, but I had to mention it. Since this thread was about a Minolta film camera, I figured it was the best place.

A mint condition Minolta CLE on ebay, this was one of the joint cameras made with Leica. I really want to pick up a decent rangefinder sometime, just for fun. This would be perfect, but way out of my price range for a toy right now.
