Jason, I don't claim to be an expert but I'll give you my opinion for what it's worth.

Obama has strongly asymmetrical facial features and the asymmetrical crop on the right shoulder serves to accentuate that. The asymmetry is further accentuated by the Dark of the Stars and Stripes to the left against the white space to the right giving a slightly unsettling feel to the image. Also, for me, the Flag should be either sharp or totally defocussed; it's neither one thing nor the other here.

Surely, it's the job of the Portrait Photographer to show his subject in the best light, particularly with a "Formal" image and especially when you are being paid big bucks for your skills.

Had Souza asked the subject to turn his head to the right (in line with his torso) and just swivel his eyes to the camera, it would have de-emphasised those asymmetric features and this simple ploy would also have made his "sticky out" ears a lot less prominent.

There are several bits of lint/hair on his jacket. OK, so you missed them at the time but why not clone them out. The tie's not done up properly and the Label badge is at the wrong angle.
Nitpicking I know, but this is a "Formal Presidential Portrait" and deserves to be perfect. There are plenty who would not have missed these obvious defects.

A tighter crop might help with the balance but won't help the rest. Maybe I should do a half face reverse to demonstrate Obama's strong asymmetry.

I was duped? You know nothing about my political standing or beliefs so don't try and assume from across the pond.

Regardless, just stop the jabs, no matter how good it feels to get one in at the end of your posts. I seriously value your input on this forum but I can do without the politics.

    I don't think I'm alone on that.

    The three faces of Obama.
I cropped it, cut the face in half down the middle and mirrored a copy of each half to create two whole faces. As I said, markedly asymmetrical.
