I suppose his thinking is that it's easier to rescue shadow detail wheras blown highlights are gone for ever.
I don't see his logic in going Manual though.
Don't get me wrong though, this is not a substitute for poor exposure. If you didn't expose enough to even capture enough detail it is going to look like crap no matter what processing you do even if there isn't much "noise".
