Bad start of a New Year

I haven't taken the camera out of the case this year. I don't have anything to shoot. I will take it with me tomorrow and try to get some shots. I was in North Jersey for the New Year and wanted to go take some NY skyline shots but it was too cold.

It's tough. I listen to the This Week in Photography podcast and they talk about the frequency of shooting a lot. I know that even beyond the new baby this has been a unusually busy beginning of year for me. Do you guys pretty much carry your camera everywhere? I almost always have mine with me, which helps.

Temperature has a lot to do with whether I have my camera with me or not. It can really screw up your equipment if it is not weather-sealed and you take it in and out of a humid to frozen environments.

Chicago is incredibly variable in that way. It is on the cusp of that kind of change. In the Spring, it certainly makes toting your gear a round in your trunk or other locations a lot easier.

I always have my camera and tripod with me. I will stop on the side of the road to take shots. I take alot of my bird shots right from the car because I don't have time to get out before they take off. I just can't think of anything else around here to shoot. I just did a search for lighthouses that are close to try to go shoot. I think I might have burnt myself out and need a break. I took almost 15000 images since last Christmas when I got my camera.

I keep some "Food Bags" in my camera bag, just in case; they take up no room at all.
If it's been very cold, I stick the camera in one and the lens in another before I take them inside and warm them up.

Frank, you know there is high school basketball and wrestling going on several nights a week, one of your local schools might be glad to have someone shooting them? Check with the athletic director and you may not even have to pay if you agree to share soem shots with the school. At 15000 shots you keep shooting like that you may wear out the shutter and then you will 'HAVE" to get a new camera!

I don't know a heck of a lot about this, but the camera's shutter is rated for a certain number of exposures. It used to not be much of an issue with film, but with digital people take WAY more pictures, so it comes into play more often. It seems odd to me that the mirror unit wouldn't go first, but I've never heard anyone talk about that.

So do I have to worry about my camera going out if I'm shooting like crazy?

Again I don't really have as much experience with this, but some quick googling indicates the typical shutter life on a modern camera to be in the range of 100,000.

I personally still think something else would tank (electronics, mirror motor and assembly, CF card bent pins!) well before the shutter bit the dust.
