You know what you are shooting ... get the right lens for it
As Sean and Frank can certainly attest, f/4 or higher is not going to do it. You really do need f/2.8 for most situations indoors. That is precisely why there is a separation at that point in the aperture scale. I don't know if I mentioned it, but outdoors, the 18-250 can give a lot of lenses a run for the money. Indoors ... you take it off.
The 70-200mm f/2.8 should provide superior coverage for basketball, at ISO-800, 1000, 1600.
Anything wider than 70mm and unless you are sitting 'ringside' ... every shot you take will look like you were up in the 'nosebleed section.' The 70-200mm f/2.8 is the zoom to use. Heck, that's why they make it!

The 70-200 is the lens I agree unless your ready to spend some big money! take a look at my pictures and my flickr page tons of high school sports shots there the good the bad and the ugly. In many high school gyms I find myself at 2500 and even 3200 ISO and it starts to get noisy. I shoot in Xfine jpeg and am only using the sony supplied software. I have elements 6 and lightroom 2 along with the share ware version of noise ninja I have smoothed out a few with that but have just been to lazy to take the time and learn how to use the programs. I also am shooting with out flash, a high quality flash that you can bounce would be great inside. I have pretty much open access and can walk courtside or field side so that helps out also. A high speed focus motor would be nice but then think about the price. There is also a great thread on here called lets loose the noise or something like that lots of tips and shots on custom settings for low light action shots, worked wonders for me and the A700, lastly stay near the 200mm end, I back off just a hair from 200, then move closer! shoot close and tight and crop waste away later! I am still learning and hope I am getting better, but.we shall see.

I have to agree. I've been spoiled with F/2.8 as I'm sure Sean has as well . The A700 can only get you so far. F5.6-6.3 won't do you any good indoors for sports.
What do you think of this as a patch? Just an idea ...

The only major drawback is you might have to go a bit more generic, We all KNOW Sony could use the free P/R but not sure how there legal dept. might feel? I have a polo shirt from Dyxum with the shutter logo on it very cool. But 300 count, umm how many Sony folk you know?
