Like you, I have a love/hate relationship with HDR images or rather, how some people apply it to images. As and aid to Dynamic range it seems justified but some of the extreme examples that abound are a distortion and hardly photographs any more. Nor can it be claimed as art when you simply feed images into a computer program, or can it? I'm still on the fence.

Maybe you should start an HDROTD thread?
The art is a little more indepth with HDR in that prior to taking a normal photo you typically pre-visualise it before even bringing the viewfinder up to your eye. With HDR you have the same thing but don't get to deliver on the pre-visualised until you've setup the tripod, bracketed, connected to a computer and had a play. From what I've found HDR is only good when the scene demands it; a problem that far too many toggers seem to be falling into is HDR for the sake of HDR. It should be HDR for the sake of art.

So what's OTD (as in HDROTD)?

    - and is there a search facility to see my previous posts? It's nice to be able to jump back rather than trawling back through pages. Until I find that feature, i'm not ignoring you; I just can't find the conversation!

Since I figured it out on my own I feel pretty smart. So.... I'm gonna answer this one
your are in the POTD thread now it stands for Picture of the Day.
To therefore, HDROTD would be "HDR Of the Day" Ta Da...
I've only done a handful of HDR shots and I'm not real keen on it yet. Probably just need to get out the HDR 101 book and read up.

I like HDR but not extreme HDR; I prefer it to look at least a little bit realistic.

An HDR section would be interesting as I would like to discuss methods etc.

    A realistic HDR of mine:

A not so realistic but not extreme:
