    To 40D or to 50D

    So, I am feeling wreckless

Way back when the 30D came out I was all set for an upgrade from my 350D/XT, so long story short I dint upgrade due to spending $$$ on the 70-200 & 10-22, plus I dint think it would add enything to my shots.

Now, presently the 40D can be had in Aus for AUD$1160ish which to my mind is cheap, rumours are that Canon is set to up prices by a hefty margin due to the falling AUD, some say by as much as 30%

So is there a real point in upgrading?? Autofocus, FPS, ISO, Dynamic ranbe, 14bit, LCD, scroll wheel & live view are the features that I would see as adding to the mix.

Is there $500 worth of "stuff" in the 50D? AFAIK its the same AF system, video mode is sort of interesting, but as far as still photog stuff is there much to justify a 50D over a 40D??

I really like everything about the 40D except the screen is a downgrade in resolution. I didn't think it would really ahve affected my feelings towards it that much, except a lot of my shots always looked out of focus, but when I brought them onto the PC it was fine.

50 doesn't have video the 5d mkII does. As said above I like everything except the lcd. the resolution sucks for judging focus. Maybe if I had my eyes from 20 years ago I might feel different, doubt it. As usual missed it by that much

The differences are mainly AF micro Adjustement, and a better LCD.

    Would you need those?

I dont have any experience with the 50D but the 40D seemed fine to me, and i can get much better deals on a 40D then a 50D. So in my personal opinion without having owned either of the two, but having some experience with the 40D, it would be a matter of $.

If the difference was only 500$, i would *personally* go with the 50D, because of the lcd and af adjustement, not to mention the cropping room.

If the difference was more then 500$ i would go with the 40D because its still a reliable camera and handles very well.

Personally im fighting between the 40D or the 5D, tho thats me and taking into consideration the lenses i already own. (Only 1 lens is EF-S)

I used the 40D and was very disappointed with the screen, everything looked constantly out of focus

the 50D is just more of the same and not that very good..

What? The 50D has a killer new LCD.

Having said that, I love my 40D and I don't mind the LCD.

The only feature of the 50D that would really interest me would be the lens microadjust feature.

I wouldn't upgrade. I have an XT and a 30D. I'm still using my XT for personal stuff. The 30D is what I use professionally.

If either camera failed and was not worth resurrecting then I would probably get either another 30D or (if there were no new 30Ds) a 40D. I like my XT but the 30D is a much easier camera to use.

After owning both a 30D and XT, the 40D really shines where those two fall short, primarily with accuracy and consistency of the AF system.

IMO that feature alone is enough to upgrade.

The AF on the 30D is better than on the XT but I'm not upgrading unless I absolutely need to.

It's a tough choice right now.... I had really hoped that the 50D would be a barn-burner, so that even for the extra money, it would make sense to go with it.

But instead, the 50D seems to be another minor update of the 40D (which was minor to the 30D and so on). I would suggest the 50D is a better camera all around, but is it worth the money?

If I was upgrading from my XTi right now, I would probably go with a 40D....
