    Latest juicy Nikon Rumors?

I've been off the grid for a while, so please forgive me!

I'm about ready to say F-it and go full frame. You all know what a nut-case zealot I am for video on DSLRs, so that figures large in my calculations. The two contenders (only one of them real) are the 5D Mk II and the D700 replacement.

Things in favor of the 5D-II (for ME):
    • HD video
    • LENSES!!!! With the ISO advantage of the D700, why can't Nikon give us some stabilized F4 zooms??!!
    • It may be a gimmick, but I'm really interested in that 'silent' mode (think children's plays and Operas, etc...)
    • Resolution (I don't need it - but it can be an advantage sometimes)
    • Price (compared to D700 (and replacement))

Things I hate about the 5D-II:
    • NO POP-UP FLASH! I need fill flash!
    • 1/200 x-synch?! C'mon!!
    • It's a Canon

I'm hoping for a full-frame Nikon that shoots HD video (and autofocuses) before the end of April 2009. I would also like to see some stabilized Nikon f/4 zooms like the Canon 24-105 f/4L IS USM and 70-200L f/4L IS USM. We're already paying for the extra stops in the very-usable upper ISO bands of the camera - why not save some money and weight by dropping a stop in the lens? I think Canon has the right idea here (and has had it for some time).

Anyway, I don't see this happening before the end of April - what's the gossip?

I'd guess the D400 / D800 / D4 or whatever they name the current generation's replacements, will all have 1080p video recording with autofocus. Keep in mind though that this is just video, if you are looking to really make a quality production you need audio equipment as well and that is where an SLR camera really falls short. HD video and crummy audio do not mix (for me, some are less picky). I'd at least like to be able to attach an external mic, with a quality wind filter. Ideally though you would just set this up seperately and then mix the two together on the computer.

Ditto on the f/4 zooms. I'd be all over a 70-200 f/4, as I have said previously. Come on Nikon!

    Crap. Me either. Thanks, Rooz!

Oh, I also forgot to mention two other minuses for the 5D-II: not even in the same league with the D700's continuous frame rate (even without the grip!) or the D700's 52-point, 3D tracking, musta-been-built-by-friggin-aliens autofocus!

Rooz, you're like the sage on this site. What's your guess as to when Nikon will give us a full-frame dslr w/HD video? Or even something D300-ish w/HD? And how about some stabilized f/4 lenses like the two I mentioned from Canon?

    Thanks again, Rooz.

Thanks VR. I thought I read somewhere that the 5D-II will take a stereo external mic input? Anyway, I'm not really thinking of making an HBO documentary or anything - just maybe fooling around and throwing a Christmas DVD together every year and mailing one to all the relatives in lieu of a 'real' gift. I'm cheap! The razor-thin DOF made possible by DSLR HD vid should make me look much more artistic than I actually am!

    sage? HA !!! http://nikonrumors.com/

i doubt the d3x will have it but the next incarnations of the d300 and d700 will have HD video. my guess would be that every dslr from every manufacturer will have HD video capability from now on.

while i think that LV and video are awesome. i think its kind of depressing in a way cos all of the manufacturers efforts will be on refining and improving these very tangible consumer, marketing influenced factors and less input will be made into dynamic range improvements which may not be as marketable but are infinately more important.

if i had it my way i would hope that nikon dont release a single dslr for the next 12-18 months and focus on a few lens' like an 85/1.4 af-s and a 35/2 afs. the rumour about the 70-200 has been around for a long time and i'm not sure if its gonna happen. i have to say that using the 70-200 with a d700 last week i saw no "real life" flaws with the lens at all. it performed and operated superbly.

With the imminent Coup in Thailand you may well get your wish if only for the fact that the Coup coupled with the world wide economy may well lead Nikon to mothballing or severely curtailing output from the camera manufacturing plants in Thailand.

Coup in Thaland = limited production = smaller inventories = higher consumer prices in a time when only those with money will be buying anyway = more profit for Nikon overall without having to slash and burn to move stock.
