Don, I though the rule of thirds don't apply to portraits.

I believe the rule of thirds should apply to every picture or at least should be considered. It just makes things more pleasing (or like the golden mean) or some of the other grids in lightroom that you can overlay.

The idea, despite this discussion is a "question of balance." How that is acheived is based in methodology ... and the rule of thirds allows for a quick compositional arrangement for many images. The diagonals keep the same idea of flow going ... so the eyes of the viewer tend to follow an imaginary line through the subject(s).
Also, finding "negative space" in your images allows you consideration of the proper crop. In this case, all that foilage on the one side did nothing for the image. It was effectively negative space and a drag on the "real" composition ... the three individuals.
If "the scene" was the subject, then you were too close for the viewer to truly appreciate its design or layout and the image was "ineffective" in that regard.
I hope this makes some sense, because this can be really hard to offer an opinion on without some sense of what is trying to be acheived.

Look, I did not create the optical laws of the Universe ... I simply learned to deal with them.
Remember: It is usually the GLASS, not the camera (except for moving to Full Frame), that gives you the most improvement in your photography.
