Crits ...
The first image is a pretty good working portrait, Frank. You have captured him at work and made it the centerpiece of the image. Works for me. The school would love it.
#2 - Well lit and no heavy shadows. Well done. Seems a bit out of balance, with the orientation. Check your diagonals and see how they skewer the shot and do a crop based on the "x" or "rule of thirds."

Does this work for ya?

Look, I did not create the optical laws of the Universe ... I simply learned to deal with them.
Remember: It is usually the GLASS, not the camera (except for moving to Full Frame), that gives you the most improvement in your photography.

It doesn't have to be awkward Will

Third is definitely an improvement on the lighting! A lower aperture (or post processing ) would help improve the focus on the subjects. Lighting is great though! The 1/30 is good, but you could probably maintain that with 200ISO or even 100ISO.

I don't smoke but did get a few samples.
Dr4gon Rooz suggested the higher ISO so I gave it a try.
The crop looks great Don
Thanks for the comments

I agree smoking is bad for you, and leads to all kinds of nasty things. but now and then a fine hand rolled cigar with a glass of single malt scotch on the back deck in a cool fall night, ahhhh it can be special.

I don't like the smell the most. Your clothes smell for hours. I will pass it don't do anything for me. I never smoked a cigarette either.

Yeah I recall. That's why I checked and commented that the lighting looked good. The lower ISO would still help slow the shutter but allow for a lower aperture (like if you had set 100 ISO and were in "S" mode at like 1/30).

I might have set it to rear flash also. It did not say in the EXIF Data.
