    All American Rejects

so a few weeks ago, i go to a local battle of the bands. i was invited by a band that hired me for a CD shoot...which is pretty cool because my work is on their CD...but anyway, back to my story.

i go to this battle of the bands and i'm shooting for fun. it's just an indoor soccer arena and they brought in a stage. no extra lighting, no nada. possibly the worst live show pictures in the history of live show pictures.

i start looking around and i see posters everywhere saying the All American Rejects were playing there in 1 week. so i get the band to talk to the guy that runs the place for me(first mistake) to see if they had a photographer and if i could shoot it. the guy says he can't pay me, but i was welcome to shoot it and i'd be the ONLY PHOTOGRAPHER THERE!!! hell yea, an exclusive for a famous band!!! too good to be true right? right.

the next week i show up. first, i have to pay $40 to get in. second, i'm outside the place talking to the band that's opening for them, the band that i did the CD shoot for...and they mention how the guy that runs the place was a real jerk. i said, he wouldn't go back on his word for me would he? i just hope i get to shoot. they said, you never know with this guy, and they say he's a real shady guy. then they tell me how they got into it the day before and they almost didn't do the show...but there they were.

the next thing i know i notice 4 other photographers there...and i'm like "uh oh." i already start to see where the guy doesn't keep his word. but i get in and i start shooting no problem.

so i make it through like 5 bands. everything's going good. i'm getting plenty of shooting in. got some nice shots too(which i might post later). i clear off a bunch of bad shots to make room for the 500+ photos i'm planning to shoot of the famous band....then finally, the All American Rejects come on stage!!! not exactly though, it was an acoustic set and the two main guys were there only. what did i care? it was famous people, this'll be great for my resume.

so i'm shooting and shooting, i think right at 50-60 photos and half way through the first song "dirty little secret" i get a tap on my shoulder. it's the guy that set everything up. he says "hey, you can't be shooting in here." i look at him and say "you told me i could shoot here last week." he says "who was the band that you came here with?" i said "****, you told **** i could shoot this show" he looks at me and says, "well you tell **** the next time they wanna f*ck with someone, they better not f*ck with me. matter of fact, LEAVE." now i'm a nice guy, i wanted to knock his ass out, but i didn't. i looked at him and said ok. i was kinda worried he'd ask me to clear my memory card or try and ask for it. so i packed up quickly and left...while being escorted.

i'll just end there. it was just a weird deal and was pretty embarrassing.

i got to shoot a famous band up close, but i had to do it in the worst place possible and only for half a song and got kicked out before i moved for different angles or swapped lenses. i suppose all i really care about is having recognizable pictures and being able to say i actually shot them live. but man it was frustrating.

rant over.....i feel better now. if you guys actually read that whole story then thanks.

here's my best 10 out of the 50.

and i'll tell y'all what. the whole thing made no sense and was just confusing...i didn't understand why they'd play there. there was seriously MAYBE 40-50 people...MAYBE. there were even kids playing football in the background at first. i was gonna take pictures of it but...well, you know what happened.

and here they are...this is what they're used to playing...multi platinum selling band.

That sucks.. i can't stand prickish people...

As for why they may be playing small gigs, the Local rock station here in Cinci as a promotion will ask bands to come do "board room shows" and they'll rent out a small venue and bring a few dozen winners to the show to watch them in a more personable atmosphere... So it may have been some sort of promotion like that.

And the pictures you did manage to take do look great! Personally I'm not a fan of their music, but still, some pretty good photos!

One word: Contract. An oral contract is not worth the paper it is written on.

That sucks dude. People like that are the reason I don't take concert photography seriously.

The manager of the venue might not have been the problem though. The band manager might have complained about it. Bands like that have to control their image and often only let approved photogs shoot them.

The band was probably feeling especially emo and wanted to play a more intimate small show to "get back to their roots" lol...

Nick - you could be right, but it seems to me that the manager of the venue was just pissed off with the other band and decided to take it out on everyone else he could just to make himself feel bigger......PRICK! I hate people like that.

Adam - Did you get your $40 back at least?

yea i'm pretty sure it all had to do with the organizer of the event....the band didn't have a manager there or anything, i kid you not, they showed up just those two guys and a girl in a RYDER rental truck. it was the oddest thing. plus, like i said, there were 4 other photographers there.

i could see the main photog complaining about me though, two of the other guys were with him...so i could see that being part of it.

i'll post some more shots of the place later so y'all get an idea of what it looked like. i went as tight as possible just so you couldn't tell it was a freakin kids indoor soccer arena.
