 The darn hurrican still looks defined ...
That darn Hurricane "Ike" is still looking amazingly like a hurricane. You don't see weather like this over the center of the nation, from any other direction.
At least the "backyard swamp" drained ... overnight, left a real mess and the dolphins are gone ... for the moment.
I really doo ... doo ... doo hope this is the end of this. (Sorry, Creedance CR)
BTW: Frank, it is upposed to be "wicked hot" on the Jersey shore. 99-degrees! Geez!  Get the shots of those bikini clad cuties, wil ya?

Look, I did not create the optical laws of the Universe ... I simply learned to deal with them.
Remember: It is usually the GLASS, not the camera (except for moving to Full Frame), that gives you the most improvement in your photography.

 Get the pressure washer out!
Well ... you can see just how deep the water got ... and survey the mess the dolphins left behind from their visit. They said "goodbye and we'll see ya ... next time!"
I told them not to hurry back! 
The brown junk is wood chips that floated off of the garden
and made their way along with the flow to the yard, downhill
into the distance. I still trying to figure out how to recollect
them and get them back where they belong. Wire rake, I guess.
Now, I'm off to the Des Plaines River, about a mile of so away ...
to see why they evacuated 1000 of our 46,000 residents.
Three lens trip ... 80-400, 28-75 & 10-20.

 The River that runs through it ...
Well, they're right, it is higher than ever. It's a darn good thing they finished that retaining wall, earlier this summer, because half of a community would have disappeared, again.
This panorama (taken today, 9-14-2008) is looking NorthEast to East to South at the corner of Des Plaines River Rd and Northwest Hwy IL-14. Again, the water is higher than ever ...
but, effectively contained by the railroad track burm and flooding the lower forest preserve area and the southern end of River Road. Those unfortunate people who continue to
live on the east side of it ... well ...
You may scroll -> . . . . to truly appreciate this image ... you need to view it while standing in a cool shower, with the stream directed in your face. 
Compared to this flood image I took back in Aug 2006 ... at which point it normally made the road impassable and flooded basements.
This was the "used to be high" level. Those days are clearly over, now.
This was also taken, today, it the north-side of the railroad burm ... high, but dry, due directly to the new retaining wall on the right-hand side.
This was taken 4 months earlier (6-10-08), during a small over flow, from the other end of the wall ... man, that's some deep water out there, today.

WOW, that Sony does GREAT with dynamic range. 
UPS drivers should wear red and white like Santa!!

Blown away!!
Hey Don, still looking plenty wet for you, we did not get the rains but boy did we get rocked!! The wind started blowing about mid day on Sun and just didn't stop, heavy winds some light rain, wind gust 70 plus MPH we are trashed in ohio. power out about 4 p.m. yesterday, my end of town still out, maybe another 24 - 36 hrs. AT LEAST before powered back up, no phones. My office is like one block from the power failure so we are 'working" well we are here anyway. Maybe try and get out this afternoon and take some pics.

 It went down ... a little.
Well, the Des Plaines River obviously crested, but it has only gone done a few inches. The below image was taken around 2PM, today (9/15/2008).
Hey, Rome wasn't built in a day, right? Well, Atlantis ... err, Des Plaines won't be recovered overnight. We know flooding ... but, now we know it better. At least it is dry ... depending on where you stand, of course.
This image is nearly 360-degrees!

This tree was part of the river bank, yesterday ... now, it is becoming part of the debris strewn river, itself.
I'd hate to have this drift through my river-side home (if I had one ).
