    Thanks for the comments, eh?

Shutter speed was 1/160. At 200mm definitely on the slow side for "The Speedster"...

FYI - The exif data is intact, I like using Kuso Exif Viewer

If you follow the branch you can see where the back of the DOF is and the beak/face is also on the edge. I'd still have to go with motion blur for that softness.

On the second image I did play a bit in Elements with the sharpening, burn and clone tools.

So the disappearing wire didn't rate a comment ?

    Cheers, Don

Don I wasn't meaning to be critical just curious. I get some images (generally much worse than yours) with a similar plasticy look and wasn't sure why. Often put it down to camera shake for me. As for the dissapearing wire that was what the spot the difference remark referred to. You wiped it out nicely in elements.

No problem Phil, speak your mind.

I simply don't understand what you mean by a "plasticy look", I don't see it on my monitor.

The camera was on a gimbal mount and a slowish shutter speed. Perhaps it's the crazy bokeh of the 50-200mm that you perceive as "plasticy".

    Cheers, Don

Don I suspect that kgosden was more accurate than me in his description. The bokeh may have an influence too especially where the DoF runs out around his beak & face.

    Hummer in the Wild

I saw hummers at my feeder only once all year so I didn't think I would catch any shots until I visit the in-laws in Phoenix. However, during my occasional visit to our local nature center I spied a pair battling for some late blooms. This bugger was tough to catch on the move. I think better AF speed will be my main reason to upgrade from the E520. These are both cropped from the 50-200 at ISO800 with just a bit of sharpening.

I actually spent a lot of time following a few monarchs around. I thought that the light brought out the texture and color of the wings in this one.
