    Lumix DMZ-FZ8

Didn't see a thread for this particular camera so hope I'm not starting out incorrectly - I did read the Forum Rules.

I can't get the camera to talk to the computer. I've used the CD, got the Lumix Simple Viewer in the computer, and have put the one end of the cable into the camera (right side up), and the other into the usb port on the front of my computer. When I hit "Acquire to PC", a little box comes up and tells me I have no pictures. Well I have, I put two on the card on purpose, and I know they are there because when I shove the card into the computer's slot, there they are.

I really would like to be able to use this facility when I am taking three or four pics, then need to see them, and either delete, or use them. It's quicker than taking out the card, and I'm always concerned that after a while the springs letting the card go are going to wear out. Can anyone help me here?

Please believe me you will wear out the USB cable long before the SD card.....But the problem may lie in the fact I think there are two storage choices on the camera PTP and Mass storage.....But I may be wrong as I never used the cable or the software.......You need no software to view the photos.......just open Windows explorer and find the camera , open that folder then the DCIM folder and then a Panny folder the photos should be there.
Sorry I can not be more help, but I do not believe what you are trying is a good idea.

Thank you for responding. So you don't think that it will wear out the little springs that hold/release the card in the camera if I take it out often?

But I don't quite see the harm in using the cable - which I would have to do if there were no SD slot in my computer. I really would like to get it working, even if I don't use it.

There are indeed two methods of storage in my camera - one in the camera itself, the other on the card. I have it set up so that it stores only on the card.

I guess the important thing here is knowing whether or not those little springs will wear out with all my taking out and putting in of the card.

    Again, thanks.

You are misunderstanding me about the storage......What I meant is if the camera is set to be seen by a computer or a printer......but it seems that has been changed on the FZ18.....the option was on my other FZs but does not seem to be available on the FZ18, Well it is available, but its on the mode dial so that is not your problem.....Sorry......
Hopefully someone can help, but I still have seen way more of those little ends on the cable fail than I ever saw a card or springs fail........I have transfered 100s of thousands of photos, all using a card reader. Good luck.

Hi again, and thanks - your response relieves my mind on the spring score! I shall not be in a hurry to get the cable business in order, then. Appreciate your information. annie
