the flash sounds like your life saver...

definitely try the F8-11, nothing like out of focus crowds

I think look at some other event photos and just use that as a basis for your photos

you definitely going to need a few packets of batteries (its your main source of light afterall) for the flash and try get there beforehand to get use to your surroundings

might sound stupid but it helps a lot

Come to think of it, with the required deposit, I can easily pick up an SB-600.

Now I just need to learn the ins and outs of the D80

Relax and don't be afraid to take controll of the group shots, but don't be controlling. If something looks wrong or out of place make the necessary adjustments. Read up on posing here's a link to get you started:
