I agree with LR Max. I can understand you're enthusiasitic about the better high ISO performance and the improved spray and pray ability of the D300, who wouldn't (initially). I just hope you understand neither of these improvements will improve your photography. I fell victim to this line of thought.

Based on what you plan on shooting - sports and lowlight band shots, the occasional wedding, the D300 + 18-200 is not what you want to shoot either of those events with. Sure, you can do it, but I argue you can do it better with a D80 and any number of lenses that are not the 18-200. I strongly urge you to consider better lenses instead of the new just released body, because there will always be "new hot camera bodies" coming out or just around the corner. I understand that you want to upgrade and the only way that it appears you can do this is by selling everything you have to basically wind up with the same glass. As someone whos been throught it, it doesn't make sense. I finally was in a position to upgrade when I owned my XT and I decided to go the body route, better high ISO perforance, faster FPS, etc etc etc. I had also entertained the idea of getting the 17-40 F4L and the 70-200 F4L. I regretted my decision to buy the body a few weeks after shooting with my shiny new 30D. Why, because my photography had not improved, nothing was really better. I convinced myself that I was seeing better image quality, and I may have been, but all-in-all, my photographs didn't improve, and my ability to capture photographs that were once considered out of my XTs reach didn't improve enough to warrant the upgrade. I should have upgraded my lenses. I should have upgraded my lenses, just like most everyone one else who had walked down this path told me. Ya, there were plenty of people who though the XT > 30D was the right move but, they were wrong.

If I were you I'd focus on lenses. Sell the 18-200 + 12-24, I think you could get 1300 USD for those if you tried. What to replace those two with??? I'd get the 24-70 AF-S, but thats me. Its a killer range and the best glass to cover it. You can't cover everything with it but you have to start somewhere. I think that lens will be the most versatile to start with. But, I'd slowly add a few primes until you can afford to get those other high end lenses, 70-200 VR etc etc. because they will impact your photographic abilities way more than a body ever will. Thats my opinion, good luck with your choice.

edit: Hell, man. I just looked at your gear list. My bad. Wow, I'd pick up that 24-70 for sure now knowing that you have a 70-200 and a 50 1.4, its a no brainer if you ask me. That D80 is just fine, paired with those three lenses you have only one thing to upgrade, improve on, hone, however you want to say, and that one thing is skill. Its the one thing we all want to improve. Good luck!

I hear you aparmley, and appreciate your feedback. Yes, I need to become a better photographer, not just get better gear. Let's see if I can explain my logic more...

The 18-200mm VR is a good travel lens for me, will come in handy this summer in Canada fishing and on family trip to Alaska. Would keep it, but I'm thinking the D80 will sell better on ebay with the 18-200 attached rather than the 12-24mm. Besides, Nikon offering instant $300 rebate when purchasing D300 + 18-200mm VR right now. The 12-24 is hot item used, so selling that wouldn't be a problem.

Yes, love my 70-200mm VR...my favorite lens! The 50mm f/1.4 is great also. and the plan is to add a f/2.8 mid range zoom in near future (28-70, 24-70, 17-55...one of those).

Don't get me wrong, the D80 has served me well. I just have this theory that consumer goods really drop in value when that particular product becomes outdated / replaced. I'm sensing when the D90 (or whatever they want to call it) comes out, demand for the D80 is going to drop. So my plan is to get out of the D80 while the gett'in is good.

I did a simliar ebay-sell and purchase last year with my point and shoot. Sold my Sony DSC-P10 (5MP) + memory cards, extra battery for $150...picked up the Canon A560 (7.1 MP) for $160. Cost me a total of $10 to move up in MP, performance, start-up time, better LCD screen, etc.

And bottom line is I promised the wife I would not spend $$ to get new camera. So I NEED to sell stuff to pay for the D300 kit. When funds get better this summer or fall, I can always add to my stable again...One thing is for sure, the 70-200mm VR ain't going no where!

The thing is, the D80 has already dropped so much that I don't see anything drastic happening when the D90 arrives. There may be more of them on the used market, but I don't see the price plummetting. It started at $1000 and is down to the $670-700 range if you subtract the cost of a kit lens like the 18-55 VR. The D90 will probably also start at that $999 mark which is quite nicely distanced from the D80. I don't think it's going to be close enough to do a lot of damage to D80 value right away, but I could be wrong.

You may be right when it comes to the D90 roll-out not having great impact on D80 prices...but I'd rather not be in that boat down the road. Upgrading now gets me the features I crave (8 fps, high iso capabilities, etc.), and I can do it without money out of pocket.

When thinking of upgrading I never once thought of the D200, even though I could have gotten good deals. Went right to the D3 actually, then came back to reality (and I actually like the 1.5 crop factor...). It's the D300 for me...right now...and will probably be the D400 when it rolls out in 2-3 years(?). Or maybe I get into wedding photography more and hammer out a D3(!?).

And the $300 instant rebate helps sweeten the deal.

Well, it's on eBay as I type. D80, 18-200mm, filter, extra battery, wireless remote, five memory cards with reader, Slik tripod and Thom's guide to the D80.

All original packaging, accessories and manuals. Starting bidding @ $1049.00, with no reserve.

I'm hoping for something around $1200, based on what simliar bundles have been selling for.

I forgot to mention since I found a few other things to sell around the house, the 12-24mm and the SB600 are off the eBay block and staying in my camera bag!

And since the D80 has a bidder, I've ordered the D300 + 18-200mm VR! Hopefully I will not have to live a day without a camera. I better have one for this weekend...little one's last soccer game and coach expecting me to shoot some team photos!
