    my computer, your computer....

ok so it's been a while since i've seen a computer thread....yea i know. canon dslr forum. whatever.

i just wanna know what everyone's workin with these days.

i recently took a direction i never thought i would. that's right, i've joined the mac community...kinda. i wouldn't have done it if it wasn't for vmware fusion so i still have my windows. and i LOVE the idea of running them side by side without having to shut down to get to the other...and in unity mode you can even minimize the windows apps to the doc like they were mac apps.

anyway, i'd just like to hear what everyone uses and how they like it...and what software is their favorite. stuff like that.

i really LOVE the iLife software. iPhoto is ridiculous fast for browsing photos. iMovie makes it really easy to make a quick video clip and even has an export to youtube function. garageband is cool even though i'll never use it.

but my main program is Lightroom. it just makes it WAY too easy to catalog my photos and edit them. i hardly ever get in photoshop anymore it's become so useful. and although i rarely use it anymore, photoshop will always be up there as a favorite.

    anyway,
    mac pro w/ leopard 10.5.2
    single quad core
    4GB ram(soon to be 8)
    3x500gb 7200rpm SATA 3Gb/s hard drives
21" gateway and 22" dell monitors.
    eye one display 2
4x6" wacom intuos 3(which i have yet to use)

and i still have my work laptop that i use from time to time...but i REALLY want a macbook or macbook pro(haven't decided yet).

I'm running Lightroom 1.4, Photoshop 7, and sometimes DPP on a Dell laptop I bought in November 2006. Lightroom is awesome but I have some actions and procedures in Photoshop that LR still cannot do. DPP is great for when I want a JPEG from RAW that's "Canon all the way".

As for the hardware itself, it's Dell Latitude D820, Intel Core2 Duo 2.16 GHz, 2GB RAM, 7200 RPM 80GB HDD as my primary working drive (500GB on an external as a storage/minimal working drive), and 15" WUXGA screen. In color managed applications like DPP, PS, and LR it's great, but the colors aren't accurate in non-managed apps like Explorer itself and Firefox the colors aren't quite right. Some sort of color profile inconsistency I never did figure out. Not the fastest machine on the block but it works just fine.
    Ouch.

that q6600 is an awesome processor. i don't know if you overclock but i've read where people who have the g0 stepping version of it are overclocking up to 3.6Ghz from the 2.4Ghz stock speed. and i even read where someone with liquid cooling had it running at 4Ghz.

and i almost forgot. i'm running lightroom 1.3.1 on the mac and photoshop cs3...and iLife '08.

    I have:
    HP Pavilion 1640a (Intel C2D 1.86ghz, 2gb ram, 250gb HD, ATi something-or-other video) with a 20"LCD.
    XP Media Centre
    Wacom Graphire 4x6 tablet

    Canon DPP, Photoshop Elements 4
FastStone Image viewer (works for RAW or Jpg)
Pinnacle Studio 10 for working with video (but I've lost interest in video since I've taken up photography)

I have an Asus EEEpc 4G too, running the stock Asus/Xandros Linux. I use it to access the web while away from home (or from the couch). It also plays movies, and I use it to do photo slideshows.

Plus printers/scanners/external hard drives, and other assorted junk scattered around my office.
