i found sony's strategy quite interesting in the USA with their fixed pricing. a layman would consider it commercial suicide for US retailers given the popularity of internet sales. i believe they have tried to implement it O/S and are getting prosecuted in france or something like that.

There are various ways to comply with competition law and still maintain retail prices.
In Apples case they simply give the dealers no margin to work with. If there is no margin there is no (or very little at least) discount ability.
In Miele's case the retailer acts as a commission agent only in Australia. When you buy your Miele fridge are stove from the retailer you are actually buying direct from Miele and the retailer simply gets a commission so as Miele are the sole sellers they are the controller of the price and they don't budge.
Subaru in Australia have done much the same thing. They now own all the metro Subaru dealers and if you are in the database on one you (and any negotiations) are visible to all.

Koni sets minimum prices for their shocks and if you sell below that price they will pull their inventory and remove you as a dealer...didn't think it was illegal?

I still keep an eye open for this 16-85. I know it's expensive but there has never been a wide range of cheap Nikkor anyway. Saying this.... I hope the price will come down much further since I don't really need it anyway.
At present, it can be bought at $765 from DDphotographics but I just want to see what you guys think the fair price for it?

Ah, thanks for the link. I didn't know there was a recent ruling that changes things. I was operating under the old guidelines before the ruling.

i cant see it coming down to $500, (which is what i consider a fair deal), anytime soon. even if you order from bhphoto now at $580 odd. you'll land it at your door at say $650-675. cheaper sure but still no bargain by any means.

i wish i could get a hold of one and use it for a while. like i said above, if its optically as excllent as what was first reported and it fits in your range...then just get it. i mean seriously, is waiting 12 months to save $100 worth it ?

I am so tempted by the 16-85 I think it would be an almost permanent fixture on my camera but even at $765 I just can't see the value (yet). Now if it were offered as a "kit" option on the D90......
