Not really, when the D80 is $539...

Depends, if you keep the kit lens for a long time it is a good deal. If you plan on getting better lenses anyway then get the D80.

From the Amazon website, why not go for this instead?

If you are new to dSLRs, the D40/D40x/D60 will keep you quite busy since there is a LOT to learn. I've had my D40 for a year and there are still things I'm learning.

But Visual Reality has a good argument too.

You really need to figure out what kind of photos you are going to be taking, and see what lenses best fit your needs/budget. Don't forget a flash unit such as the SB600 if you are on a budget.

This will be my first DSLR and I have around $500 to spend, I want to get the best camera for the money while I can, hence me considering the D60, even though I'm currently wanting to get the D40.

I just want to get the best camera I can for the money I have since the kit lens will keep me busy for quite awhile.

Get the D40 over the 60, the extra money isn't worth it, especially down the road when you upgrade anyway.

    And you will

Still thinking about what I want, but I think it might be the D40.
