Any ol' polarizer?
I've been digging through threads about lenses and didn't notice any about polarizers, though I will grant you I didn't go back all that far... So I apologize and you all can tell me to go hang if this has been done recently.
I'm getting a new lens (probably the Nikkor 55-200mm VR f/4-5.6 though I'm open to suggestions.... *sigh* I hate indecisiveness.)
ANYWAY, when looking at lenses I thought that I should just go ahead and get a polarizer since I like taking photos outdoors. But I don't know if I need to get a SPECIAL polarizer or if any ol' polarizer would work.
Any tips would be appreciated.
I've so missed being a part of photography....

You will need a circular polarizer, your camera cannot autofocus when you put a linear polarizer on it.
There are many different types of circular polarizers, for instance slim ones (for wide angle lenses) and multicoated ones (for the best possible quality). I am using a regular circular polarizer myself. I find that it does not degrade the imagequality. I only get some ghosting when the sun is in the frame (in which case a polarizer would not have any effect anyway).
If I am not mistaken, I believe Rooz had an expensive multicoated one for one of his lenses and a regular one for another lens. He said that the difference was minimal and that you might as well go for the regular single coated polarizers.

I have a Hoya S-HMC Pro-1 circular polarizer for my 12-24 & 70-200. It is the top of the line Hoya, from what I can see, and ran about $150. Actually, this is my second S-HMC Pro-1 circular polarizer, as I accidentally shattered my first one... oops. Yes, it is rather expensive, but when you look at the lenses it is on, I certainly didn't want to throw just any 'ole polarizer on them.
I have found absolutely no image quality loss with this polarizer, and with its brethren the S-HMC Pro-1 UV filter. Optically they are remarkable. If you held the UV filter in your hand, you would swear that there is no glass in the thing as there is no reflection, glare, fogging, loss of light or anything else that would make you believe that something is between your eye and your hand.
With that said, I would recommend at least using a multi-coated filter.
I have dealt with these guys on ebay, and they have been excellent. Pricing is awesome too.

VC,
I'll give ya $100 for that 70-200 mm you got there.
Okay, so I have one vote for it doesn't really matter and one vote for a $150 filter.
How much SHOULD a circular polarizing filter cost? Because for $150 extra I'd add it into a lens and probably get something different....
H says he wants an expensive hobby now.

$150??? The link I gave you leads to a $45 filter. Im not saying you shold spend $150 on teh filter. In fact if you pay $150 for a 52mm filter, you have really been ripped off.

I second what VTec said. I also got the same Hoya filter. I didn't get it from the same seller though. (At the time I got my filters, this guy was more than the other one.)

That is not the size filter you need, but just a close up of the picture. (I have that lens bookmarked.
Their shipping is pretty fast, only takes about 10 days, considering it is coming from HK. Now, in hindsight though, I would order from the ebay guy to keep our money here in America. JMHO.

VTEC,
Sorry, I just read your post earlier and didn't check out the link. My apologies. It's what I get for multitasking too much. Sometimes I skip steps.
