Another newbie D80 lens search
New,here, have been lurking and looking at all the great photos and soaking in all the knowledge here. Just recently purchased a D80 with 18-55 and 55-200VR but I'm not sure I have what I need. Last SLR was a AE-1 program but have been using a digital p&s for a couple of years now. My focus will be on indoor and outdoor sports, football, basketball and baseball, every zoo I come across, concerts and some portraits. I am a regular at the Masters golf tournament and filled a 1G card with my p&s last year. From all I've read, a nikkor 50mm 1.8 looks like a keeper. So my question is what else do I need? I would like to keep it as simple as possible until I learn DSLR and can bring the lenses I have now back and exchange if I need to. Do I need a 18-135mm to go with the 50mm? Any information and suggestions is greatly appreciated. Thanks Jeff

Well, I have basically $450.00 trade in value on the two lenses in the kit, could go another $500.00 if need be.

i wouldn't trade the kit lens cos you need it for day to day use. the best fast lens options available to you close to budget are:
sigma 70-200 f2.8 $900
sigma 50-150mm f2.8 $680
nikkor 80-200mm f2.8 $900
nikkor 85mm f1.8 $400
nikkor 50mm f1.8 $100

I'd get the 50mm f/1.8 and then the nikkor 80-200mm f/2.8 if size doesn't matter, or the sigma 50-150mm if you want a lens a little easier to travel with.
