Sorry lads, I'm late in as usual - glad I missed the argy-bargy though!

I'm going to side with Rich for once - 1/640s is my standard floor for cookie-cutter field sports shots.

But just to show that the old fella (Thommo) hasn't got all his screws loose, here's one at 1/250s that's pretty satisfactory in my book:

well it looks like i'm gonna go out and see what i can do with the 30d and 70-200 2.8. i'm guessing the IS isn't gonna help at all even in pan mode??? is it true the IS will slow autofocus? i think i read that somewhere.

wish i had a monopod or an off shoe cord. i got a feeling i'm gonna get some crazy red eye from the flash i hate the way red eye looks...even after corrected you get that deer in headlights look.

and i've been thinking about it. i think with the lights on the field it wouldn't be hard to overpower them with flash and then i wouldn't even have to worry about white balance. but then again i don't really know. i suppose i could try both, flash and non flash and compare.

About IS. IS is great if you are trying to shoot at slower than the old rule of thumb 1/focal length. With the 1.6x crop factor even at 200mm I would never want to be shooting sports at slower than 1/500, and I use a monopod wherever I can, so the IS would not be much help. IS eliminates camera shake, but does nothing to freeze the motion of a fast moving subject.

So while the Canon 70-200 2.8 IS is reportedly a great lens, for sports like soccer or football I don't think it is significantly more useful than the 70-200 2.8 without IS.
Although I would add that in my experience, IS can enable you to more easily focus on the subject because it eliminates/reduces the camera shake.

    Now, now, let's play fair...you said 1/100 not 1/250...big difference....like 150% difference...C-Dub gave you an undeserved get-out-of-jail free card! It's a conspiracy!!!

No one would argue that 1/250 is doable.

I'm having too much fun busting your chops this week. Maybe because my camera is in the shop for a focusing screen replacement and cleaning and I have nothing better to do! Sorry!
