    A new 14mm f/2.8L? The II

Did it get in under the radar?

There is a new 14mm out there, too.

Check it out -> EF 14mm f/2.8L II USM

Look, I did not create the optical laws of the Universe ... I simply learned to deal with them.
Remember: It is usually the GLASS, not the camera (except for moving to Full Frame), that gives you the most improvement in your photography.

Seeing how Nikon zoom lenses perform, I am not sure if the 14-xxmm f2.8 zoom can be considered a "one-upping". Nikon zoom lenses tend to have quite some CA, even the expensive ones, and worse barrel distortion.

I think that most probably the 14mm prime will outperform the 14-xx zoom by quite some margin (not so strange for a prime anyway). So... different products, with different qualities.

I got an email from Canon about the new 14mm last week. Included was information of the new 18-55mm IS. Even IS can't get me to buy that POS lens again.

The element and group counts are the same, but the MTF specs on the new one looks a bit more promising - probably attributed to the Aspherical lens element. I'd also not get it, but it'll attract some newcomers. If it's say, $300 it could be a nice alternative to the 17-55 f2.8 IS for $900.

Considering that Canon has essentially priced the 17-85 IS at $200 on the 40D, this one may become it's higher IQ brother they can include as a kit upgrade.

I heard about this one in Feb this year when my original was stolen. It is on the radar.
