question
of course right after less than 24hours after I placed a pre-order for the Canon 40D, the specs and release date for Nikon d300 are posted.
my question is should I wait for the d300? .... $1300 for the Canon 40D body
$1800 for the Nikon d300 body.

Do you already have Canon glass?

Which camera is best for you is really decided on the portability potential of components that you already own (lenses, etc.), specs and hands on experience.
Unless you are in some urgent need of a camera, you should wait to read a few reviews and more importantly, get a 'hands on' session for yourself with both units. You will only do yourself a disservice by pre-ordering a camera if you are really uncertain between two completely different brands.

the d300 ? well, no one even knows for sure if its even going exist in the coming months announcements let alone knowing what the specs or performance of the camera will be.
my advice to you is wait until there is more information on the cams performance before you invest in anything. within the next couple of weeks the spec of the d300 will be out, (if at all), so at least you go into the decision with your eyes wide open. anything else is pretty much flying blind.
if you are feeling any buyers remorse...well what can i say ? you deserve it.

It is unknown which camera has the best image quality, and that will be unlcear untill somewhere in November.
The EOS 40D will be widely available in september, the Nikon D300 will begin appearing somewhere in November.
Are there any features you will miss on the 40D that the D300 has?
Both cameras look to be very good, with the Nikon you will ahve to wait with making photos till december. Only you can answer which camera would be best for you and your taste.

Both unknown, both unseen (in a sense). Do you want to go Canon or Nikon? Since you asked the question I assume you haven't built up your lens collection yet.
Either one will more than satisfy an average photographer's needs.

The 40D looks to be a very good camera as it is. I don't have any doubt it will be a great performer, regardless of the release of the D300. However, the D300 has a lot more/better features. It is definitely a step above the 40D and that is reflected in the price.
I think everyone would agree that it's a good idea to wait for reviews on both camera's before making a decision, but quite frankly I think the decision should (already) be made, and that's based on the features/price (do you want to spend $500 more?), as there aren't likely to be any serious issues with either camera.
How much camera do you need? How much do you want?
If you wait for the D300, you'll get to see reviews before making a decision. If not, enjoy the 40D...it looks like a winner for it's price.

thanks for all the input
I've been trying to choose between canon and nikon for a while now, since I do not have lenses for either .
The preorder is just to hold a place in case I did decide on the Canon, I won't be charged until it ships. I'm not in a huge rush, wanting to purchase by the end of the year/january. I will have the $$ for the camera in the next week, which is why the debate. And I've been waiting for the past year or so to finally purchase one. If the bodies are the same as the previous models, I will be happy with either. I just wondering if the Nikon's specs outweigh the Canon. At the moment I don't know how much camera I need I would like the option of using it for a range.
I'll wait for the reviews

The specs on the Nikon D300 are more impressive than on the Canon 40D, but until I see some real world pictures, there's no way to tell which one's pictures I like more. I'm also waiting on Sony, as they are likely to have a very competitive offering if they can lose the noise issues the A100 had. I've always preferred Canon's color reproduction over anyone else though. Personally.
