I bought one yesterday. I think you'll know how I feel about it after looking at some of the pics I took yesterday. I was up until 2:30 am this morning taking pictures, I should have called in sick today.

These are just some that caught my eye. I took about 1 000 pics last night and I'm soo tired.

What do you guys think? Are they an improvement on my work with the 50?

This lens is a workhorse, it just does exactly what I tell it to. I love it!

It may seem like this was an impulse buy but in fact I've been planing this for months. originally I was going to buy the sigma 30mm 1.4. I was going to pick one up before my honeymoon but we were running a little late so we didn't have the chance. We did better then we thought when all the wedding bills were paid so the extra dough was there.

I spent a few restless nights debating the purchase. I take advice to hart a lot of the time, so when I hear people say it's not the camera it's the photographer. I really believe that, and found it really hard to justify the upgrade from my 50mm. The 50mm 1.8 gets great reviews as far as sharpness so I was worried I was falling into the "L" sickness.

But my frustration was continuing with my XT/50mm 1.8 kit. I needed to make some kind of a change. I debated sticking with the 50 and upgrading to the 5D. Much of my frustration is in the low light focusing of the 50/XT combo so I thought if I keep the 50 and get a 5D I'll get the field of view and the focusing I want along with the ergonomics I crave.

The 5D will be replaced shortly though and the tried and true advice of "upgrade glass before body" was ringing in my ear. That and the local camera shop had the 35mm on sale and in stock. That means I can try it out and if I don't think it's for me it's a two minute drive to return it.

After I decided I was going to do it the hard part came, convincing my wife that it was a good idea! I thought she was going to think I was a nut for wanting one but she was cool about it.

Well my conclusions so far are that I have made a good decision buying a quality lens instead of buying a new body. I think buying a body alone wouldn't have given me such a dramatic difference. I am blown away by the image quality difference. I always thought the 50mm 1.8 was a sharp lens, well I've redefined what sharpness means. The 35mm gives more then sharpness though. I find a depth to my pictures that I never had before.

I've been offered an all expense paid trip to Toronto to shoot one of the bands I shot for on Thursday. Would they have offer if I shot the show with my 50mm 1.8? I don't know.

The depth you now find mostly comes from the "standard" view the 35mm offers you... and what also makes a huge change the is much better contrast and colour this lovely "L" brings.

You sure made a very good choice... This is one lens I would like to have too.

Really nice work Nick. Congrats on getting one of the top prime lenses. I think I can tell you enjoy the lens just looking at the photos.
