I guess that one is subjective. I'm not sure it's hundreds of dollars better.

Actually, I only said that I questioned my wisdom in selling the 1.8 and buying the 1.4. Considering the amount of time that the 50 sits in the office rather than being attached to my camera it is an appropriate statement... for me. I didn't imply (nor did I attempt to) that one was superior or 'better' than the other in absolute terms. I resist saying that one lens or camera is better or worse than another because as with everything gear, 'better' carries a lot of subjectivity. My gear might be 'better' for me but 'worse' for someone else and of course, even 'better' still in the hands of a superior photographer

I've owned both and when I owned them both I tested them side by side and I was shocked by how close they were optically. Actually, my copy of the f/1.4 had more CA than the f/1.8. The f/1.4 tends to render smoother bokeh and the focus is faster, but I never liked the focus in the f/1.4 - I really wish they would update it to true USM. I'm not sure if Canon ever plans on updating or releasing a new EF non-L prime however. Canon hasn't released a new EF prime since 2001.

BBphoto's point is well taken, the f/1.4 is better in some ways, but is it over $200 better? That's debatable. One thing I love about the f/1.8 is its so small and light I can stick it in my pocket.

    Like that first shot BB.

Looking forward to some FE shots Faisal.
