I hear ya. I was never interested in flash brackets until I saw the Newton design.

hey - thanks for the link - I know the advantages it has regarding shadows, but are there any other benefits of using a bracket such as this? What other options and scenarios are possible.

ya, less shadows and lighting consistency when switching from portrait to landscape. The big thing for me would be the consistency. I hate getting a good bounce going until I switch to portrait and it messes with my lighting.

I'm sure this is a great shot but right now it just creeps me out as there have been some unidentified sawed off human feet, still in shoe, showing up around western British Columbia Canada. It's a mystery that the police have yet to solve and people are starting to get a bit freaked out. 6 feet in total so far.

i don't really mind the vertical shadows... look at this club shot, I really like how the shadows are going off to the side, it makes it look like a faux-off-camera look.. very minimal PP on this shot, just some brightening. taken in darkness.

I've been playing around more with the 580's built-in flash features in combination with the Stofen diffuser. The above shot, is done with the flash card out but the built-in diffuser retracted. That's what gives it the "focused" flash (and the dark shadows at the extents of the frame). I could have done the same shot with the Stofen on and vertical and I would have got much more evenly distributed light, if I wanted. The 580's built-in diffuser is pretty good as well, and you can use that in conjunction with the Stofen for even more lighting variations.
