    The second one...love the composition....
I intentionally underexposed the photo so I could capture the clouds (because I was too stupid to get my polarizer)

so then in photoshop I brightened the image and divided the land from the sky via layers so that I could expose them both correctly without touching the other

and then I use burn tool a bit on the sky and dodge tool on the land, I didn't want to properly expose all of the land, only the part that was lit up by the sunlight, because I didn't want that HDR feel to it

also, curves is YOUR BEST FRIEND, I mostly use Red and Blue with green as the colour that supports the other two

and really.thats it I just nudge a bit up, a bit down until I get the right kind of colour that I want..I do that to all the channels

I cannot emphasize how effective curves can be..

also I use gradient map->(layer blending) soft light quite a lot to get that contrasty feel when then I control the Opacity to control how much is applied

truth be told I just mess around and around until I get it the way I want but I always use

gradient map (black and white, which then if I'm going to use colour, I then change the layer blending to soft light or multiply)
    curves
    burn/dodge

sometimes I have two gradient map layers and 5 curve layers

it kind of reminds me of the windows xp wallpaper..

    TenD - very nice.

Turn - love both of those.

Zmikers - I agree, it doesn't quite work for me either; I think it is because I find the scene uninteresting.

Another one from Bryce Canyon....(these are called hoodoos)....Paiute indians apparently believed the hoodoos were "Legend People" who were turned to stone by Coyote.

zmikers: I find that quite often people like some of my photos that i don't really like and I never understand why. Then the photos i think are the best and i like the most, they don't really like.

The photo doesn't particularly do anything for me either, but i'm not a fan of the water...
