The foreground is lit by street light, and the underside and front face of the bridge has been painted with flash.
White balance was the problem with this. Street lights are very orange, flash is very white, so I had a mess. I flashed the underside of the bridge, which was easy to blend, but the mistake was flashing the face of the bridge. The front of the bricks was orange from the streetlight, and the crevices between the bricks were blue/white from the flash. I fixed it the best I could... I'll be more careful next time.
It looks perfect to me. I wish I could get shots like that.

Thanks for the tips. I think its time to head back to school and get some more edgemacation. my high school photo classes were in the 70s, you know, black powder flash.

I agree with what others have said here. Force yourself to shoot in M or even Av mode. Will this necessarily give you better photos? - no - but it will teach you about DOF (depth of field) and SS (shuuter speed) and the effect that this has on your photos.
Try shooting in RAW too. I do all my RAW to jpeg conversion in DPP, which came free with your 40D. Its really very easy and it gives you so much more control over your photos. Adjust your RAW photos in DPP with regards to contrast, saturation and WB and see how this impacts your photos - you will be amazed at the difference.
And the most important thing, in my view anyway: Calibrate your monitor!! I put this off for a long time and it has made probably the single biggest improvement in my photos. I use Spyder, but there are others. This you will have to pay for, but its well worth it and I'm a cheap bastard!!

Hooray, today I took pain to webpost my photos and organize them in folders. Now you can view the link to this in my profile. I stored there only those images I believe are worth, will add some more when have time and will. Today I spent half the day on this excercise, cleaning, resizing, uploading, etc... uh
RedShark, thank you for the tip about DeviantArt page, really very nice and user friendly space, I found easily how to organise photos there.

Thanks. I take my gear out in the snow all winter long - its the one time when I find that a lens hood really helps (keeps snow off the front element!). Last winter I used a plastic grocery bag to protect my gear , this year I may get something nicer.
Here's a couple more from the winter...
