Have you looked at the Sigma 50m 1.4? I don't know too much about it but it looks pretty cool.

Nice colors, the 17 40 has special colors, used to love it
On the Sigma, the 30 had problems focusing on any thing beyond 5m, landscapes even stopped down to f8 were blurry

Thanks guys, here's the same shot with less DOF, f/5...
I still love experimenting with DOF; one of the best thing about dSLR's.
