I like it - with the tree! Very nice shot! What software/method did you use for HDR?

I used Phase One Capture One v4...playing with the highlight and shadow dynamic range sliders. I also bumped the saturation a tad.

I definitely like your "after" shot better. The recovered mid-ground detail adds to the image and creates a sense of being there. What software did you use?

I used Gimp with the Exposure Blend script, which does what I had been doing by hand for a while! The script uses layers with inverted layer masks. A very decent little tool that has good results albeit with some tweaking, as good as I have managed with Photomatix and Dynamic HDR.
