This is one of my favorite shots from the last basketball tournament I covered. I followed the action on the fast break. The defender tried to cut off the ball handler, but she faked her out, switched hands by passing the ball behind her back and kept going. I thought it was too cool and glad to have captured it.

I know, you are saying ball, face and action. Well, I got two of the three in this shot. It wouldn't have looked the same from any other angle.

1D MK III w/70-200 f/2.8L IS Manual exposure, One shot, AI Servo
ISO 320, F/3.5, 1/250 sec SS.

I used Elinchrom Skyports to trigger two Alien Bee 1600's mounted on light stands and bounced off the ceiling. In this shot they were behind and to each side of me.

-How do you handle lighting a huge gym like that ? i recall the strobist article, but just wanted to know if you had a different approach, or were just trying to bounce the light across evenly ? Did you use all 640w?

Thanks, i had a bare elinchrom d-4 with a UPS attached to it, about 12 feet or so away. Full blast. I tried other angles, and lighting styles, but i had gotten snow in my shoes from the trek to the location and called it a day within a total of like 20minutes i think. I had 1 keeper, and that was enough for my frozen toes.

Stringer I really like that shot and agree with you that any other angle would not have done it justice, so what if you can't see her face. Her face does not define that shot, the movement of the basketball behind her back does and you have captured that. In my opinion, two things would make that shot better. 1. The clump of hair not coming across her eyes (you can't control that). 2. Catching the defenders face in the photo as I think her face tells more of the story than does that of the girl dribbling.

It looks like that basketball court is sitting inside of a hockey rink given the boards and plexiglass along the sideline of the court, it is?

Thanks for the kind words. The gym is a combo gym/auditorium with a stage at one end (the end I was at). Bleachers are on one side only, the team benches are on the other. The bleachers are elevated with a wall and plexiglass to protect the front row of spectators. This is a private school located in south east Texas. Not much hockey played down here. :-)

How do you handle lighting a huge gym like that ?

Lighting was tough to get even. One light stand was against a white wall (behind the team benches). The other stand was mounted to a hand rail in the first row of the bleachrs (no wall to help with bounce). I had the one against the white wall set at 1/2 power and the other at 3/4 power. Both were aimed at the ceiling above the court.

Note: I shot a game last night in a rather dark gym. I used 3/4 power and it worked out really well.
