    another panning one from today
    1/40s hand held
used spot metering to try and light up the side of the ute (i'm facing sun), that's why the road is really bright...also tried some evaluative, but had most of the car in shade.

got a quick question: should i be shooting in AI Servo or Single Shot focussing mode?
I thought the point of AI servo was track the subject and keep it in focus as it moves through the viewfinder, but the goal of panning is to keep the subject in the same position in the frame

    edit:
here's one that came out with the side shaded. i've tried to bring it out by combining raws in photomatrix

just looks a little bit ott...the green is a bit too green

Nice shot! I'd use servo but maybe some of the more experienced auto shooters will chime in.

    Late Models at Full Speed

I was out with the kids watching the stock car races at a track near us (Flamborough Speedway in Hamilton, ON, Canada). We didn't have great light, as the sun was setting in our faces, and by the point that this photo was taken, it had already gotten pretty dark. You have to make a choice... Do you want great photos, or do you want to watch the race? The racing was awesome!

My panning technique is still kind of poor resulting in few keepers. At the start of the night, I had the shutter speeds too fast (resulting in sharp, frozen cars). Later I got the shutter speed down into the correct range, but then I was not panning very smoothly.... More practice, right?

Nism, I use Servo anytime the subject is moving...

Nice work, Gary. I had the same problem with freezing the cars too much when I was shooting the track event a few weeks ago. Have you tried using a monopod? I found it helped a lot!

nism: I really like that second shot. I like the green just the way it is.

hope a wider shot is OK for a pano

the merge is far from perfect but overall I think it's OK for a 34-shot pano - also not totally content with the colors and balance. Think I'll play with it some more later.

Great Pano. A question, if I may? I can understand the mechanics of a pano when the subject is static but how do you compensate for the movement in the picture? That boat did not stay still while you adjusted your camera. How do you avoid movement artefacts?
