Actually the gap represents 10% at that focal length, so it is significant, but if I'm missing something as a result of it, I guess I don't realize it from a practical shooting stand point. I thought a long time about getting the 17-55mm IS but did not want another EF-S lens. I'm going full-frame this spring and the 24-105mm is really designed as a full-frame "walk-around" lens. It's really not wide enough to be a true "walk-around" lens on an APS-C camera...thus the need for the 10-22mm. So, once I buy the 5D replacement, the next lens is probably the 16-35 and after that the 100-400 (hopefully Canon upgrades this lens soon with the newer IS...and kills off the push/pull design).
The Sigma 18-200 will stay on the XT as my back up and the 10-22 goes on E-Bay...
Thanks Drama!
I guess its not the gap that bothers me, its starting at 24mm. I used to have a 28-105 and found that this was never wide enough to take just one lens. I have been shooting at longer FL's lately though and perhaps 24mm will be just wide enough. When I think I will need wider I could always bring along the 10-22. I really want a quality lens with IS though.
Have you been happy with the 24-105 overall? How would you rate the bokeh?
The other reason I am thinking of the 24-105 over the 17-55 is that even though I just got the 40D, I too have the 5D itch!!!
The 24-105 on the 5D would be like a 15mm-65mm on a crop sensor, which would be a perfect range. Add the 85mm f/1.8, the 700-200 f/4 IS and the 100mm macro and I would be in photographic Nirvana!!!

On an APS-C camera, for me, 24mm (approx. 38mm FF equiv.) is definitely not wide enough. I had the 24-105 for about 15 minutes before I ordered the 10-22mm (approx. 16-35mm FF equiv.). The combo is great together.
I'm liking the 24-105 a lot. My copy is wicked sharp...even at 105mm at f/5.6. Color and contrast are amazing. It virtually eliminates the need for post-processing. Most of my China shots were taken with it and it performed great in the field. At f/4 and f/5.6, the bokeh is fine but not spectacular. At smaller apertures, to be honest, the bokeh is not that great...even a little strange looking sometimes. Also, at large apertures when the background objects are fairly close to the subject being isolated, the bokeh is not that "smooth" and a little "nervous" looking, but is completely acceptable (IMO). But it's not winning any bokeh awards, that's for sure (keep that 85mm f/1.8 handy!).
For example:

Exposure Time = 1/250"
F Number = F5.6
Exposure Program = Aperture priority
ISO Speed Ratings = 100
Exposure Bias Value = ±0EV
Metering Mode = Average
Flash = Flash did not fire, compulsory flash mode
Focal Length = 105mm
But you really can't beat the image quality and the utility for the price. Given the opportunity to go back in time, I'd definitely buy it again.

Thanks for the info JTL. i've heard about the "bokeh issue" with the 24-105, but your example isn't so bad. Ideally, I should rent a 24-105 and a 17-55 and compare them. I like my 17-70, but I really want IS. Lots of thinking to do. Thanks.

Frosty grass just gets that blue-ish colour, especially in shade. So I think the WB was quite spot on.

I shot this RAW in AWB and made no adjustments. The AWB got it just right. New England Fall colors are ever changing.

Nice shot & love the colors.
