Smile User Review- Canon EF12 Extension Tube...

    Hi guys,

Had some free time the other day and was playing around with the Canon EF 12 extension tube.... It sure does work & i'm impressed...

Yes, at USD140, its very pricey compared to the Kenko set, but on the plus side, it maintains full electronic contact with the lens and AF is possible on both the EF ans well as EF-S lenses. Build quality also looks great with full metal construction and good finish.

I tried it with all of my lenses... the 18-55kit lens, the 50mm 1.8 and the 70-300IS too. Must say it works best with the 18-55 and the 50mm. It produces the best magnification with the 18-55 at 55mm setting and some amazingly shallow DOF with the 50mm. The bokeh is very nice and creamy too.

    Couple of pics here:

Pic #1 - Maximum Magnification with 18-55 at 55mm. Subject is a table watch with Diameter of 2.5"
    400D, 18-55 at 55mm, ISO 800, f/8, 1/15

    Pic #2 - Maximum Magnification with 18-55 at 55mm mounted on EF-12
    400D, EF-12, 18-55 at 55mm, ISO 400, f/5.6, 1/15

Pic #3 - Shallow DOF Display with 50mm mounted on EF-12
    400D, EF-12, 50mm, ISO 400, f/2.2, 1/60

Pic #4 - Old British Gold Coin (diameter 20mm)
    400D, EF-12, 18-55 at 53mm, ISO 1600, f/8, 1/80

Pic #5 - Old British Silver Coin (diameter 30mm)
    400D, EF-12, 18-55 at 55mm, ISO 800, f/5.6, 1/25

Quite neat, but you know the kenko set keeps AF too right?

An often over-looked piece of kit. I use mine every now and then for close portraits where my normal lens won't go.

Interesting effect on the OOF section of the Canon lens cap.
