Well,, we just returned from South Carolina, and realized that I had left my S700 in the taxi back there...Maybe I'll get it back... If not...I wonder if I'll go buy a S700 or a DSLR...

thanks again for your comments and advice.
Oldme, apologies for taking so long to reply.
Almost all lenses have some form of optical distortion to some degree, whether barrel/pincushion, soft edges, vignetting, or chromatic abberation (including purple fringing). Some control those tendencies better than others. With a fixed lens S700, there's not a lot you can do to reduce purple fringing in camera, except to try to avoid situations which will exacerbate the tendency, i.e. to try to avoid images that include high contrasts or strong light sources in frame, but of course to do this would limit our photographic opportunities too much. So Bynx is right, the only way to reduce purple fringing is by using some editing software in post-processing. Sorry I cann't recommend any software though, that's still an area that I've yet to explore and gain experience in, although virtually any software editing program would probably have the sort of function that Bynx described, eg Corel Paint Shop Pro etc, which may be cheaper than Adobe Photoshop. Other areas in DCRP to check out for that info' would be the Tips & Techniques thread and the Software thread.
Lights, in night photography where you're using fairly long exposures/slow shutter speeds, will almost always flare to some extent, i.e. have those soft star shaped type edges, this is due to either lens flare or sensor bleeding, i.e. where the photosites of the sensor get overloaded and the light leaks into the surrounding photosites. Some lens flare can actually add to the effect of some photos, but photosite bleeding/streaking is never good and could potentially damage a sensor.
I hope I understood your questions and that the above was helpful. Good luck!
You might find this website interesting in explaining some of the issues involved:

Shankar, some great photo's from your trip, sorry to hear you lost your camera in the taxi on the way home.
Hope you're able to get it back!

Eddie, some fine landscapes! I really like the last shot in the set.

Here are a few more night photo's from Rushcutters Bay, this time I had my tripod with me!
Made a big difference, but of course couldn't avoid boat movement due to the fairly stiff NE'er blowing across the harbour....
All shot in manual mode, 4secs, f/3.5, ISO200, with the tripod:
