ef50mm f/1.2L USM
Today, I was pleasantly surprised when I found out my work purchased a new lens for testing. This time, quite an expensive one! When we pulled it out of the box, I couldn't help but notice how hefty it is! It really puts my 50mm 1.4 to shame in that regard. Build quality also seems very nice.
Looked at some reviews and it seems to perform admirably, but not much better (if that) than some of the other 50mm primes. The benefit, obviously, is the optional f1.2.
Has anyone had experience with this lens?
I may be taking it home sometime soon to check out

No experience here. Would love to get one but there appears to be some dialogue on the internet on a problem with the focal plane shifting slightly when stopping down to around f/2, so I'm waiting to see what happens.
Oh, and for the inevitable price drop after the early adopters.

Very stange, what could possibly cause focus to change by making the hole bigger? I can imagine with a bigger aperture the edge of the image would get a slightly different focal plane. But the whole image? Sounds a bit odd...

I read a bit about it over at FM (check out the lens review section for links). Apparently the lens is a non-floating design, and when stopping down at close distances the focal plane moves.

We sell imaging systems for biomedical purposes. The lens in question is actually being mounted to one of our higher end camera's (upwards of $20k) on a darkroom (box) about 24" from samples. I'm wondering if this focusing problem(?) will have any effect in our work...Will be interesting to find out (but, that's RnD's job).
My friend has a 20D and the 50mm 1.8, so I'm going to be taking the lens home (probably this weekend) for him to check out as well.
