    My new D40

    Hi,

I received my D40 yesterday. I tested it and took few photos in auto mode. Everything worked fine, built in flash too, . But there was one thing that I noticed, while I held the camera near my ear, turning it upside down I hear some faint sound, as if some lose metal part/spring. Since then I am a bit worried. Also when the supplied Kit lens is attached I feel a very minute play when I move the camera up and down (not with jerk), as if some parts are not fitted firmly.

I could have tested this with a few cameras in the showrooms or so, but due to the ambient noise levels in those situation it wont be possible to detect.

These things could be normal, but in all it gives me a fragile feeling of the equipment.

    Congratulations!
You are the very first person that I know of to have posted this query anywhere regarding the D40. You have joined hundreds or maybe even thousands of others who have posted the exact same query regarding Nikon DSLR's over recent years. You may have opened the flood gates for others to follow.
What you are hearing is the orientation sensor. It's a little ball bearing that floats in a cavity and is always at the "bottom". This is how the camera knows how to correctly display the orientation of an image. Wherever the sensor bearing is is where the bottom of the picture is and the camera notes that in it's Exif.
Almost all Nikon DSLR's have this system and this noise it is normal, don't worry about it and think how special you are to have been the very first person to have asked.

one more question, which again could be the very first for D40 he he he......
I noticed there is a small black plastic thing protruding at 7 o clock position at the periphery of the lens mount metal ring, if seen from front. It seems spring loaded. Looked into the manual, to know what it is, but no data yet seen.

    any enlightment...??

If this is what you are refering to, then it appears to be some locking mechanism for the lens. Sorry, dont know the technical name
