30D v D80 / stabilization
I would like help on the differences between the Canon 30D and Nikon D80. I am leaning toward the Nikon D80 but I am not sure about the lack of stabilization in the Nikon. I want to be able to shoot telephoto and the Canon has stabilization. How much difference does it make in a hand held shot?
I shoot some action shots and wildlife and wold like to be able to get out of the car and shoot. I will be starting with all new gear so the brand does not matter yet. Thank you

There are several threads on this topic....check them out. Both cameras lack any camera body image stabilization and do it with expensive lens. The Pentax K100d offers IS on the camera body so you can use a regular lens.

the 30D DOES NOT have stabilisation.
I had the same debate about which camera:
http://www.dcresource.com/forums/sho...t=28207&page=4
The consensus is:
-arguably the 30D has better high iso performance (I dont agree)
- the 30D can shoot at 5fps (which might suit your shooting style)
- The 30D has no AF assist lamp.
- D80 has higher resolution, better viewfinder better standard lens kit, cheaper (in the uk but only marginally)
- canon have more lenses to choose from at better prices.
you are buying into a system (i.e. what lenses are cheapest that will suit your needs will probably govern your choice).
I am going with the D80 (see my thread at the top for why!).
good luck

this is the same post but the first is in the Canon forum and the second is in the nikon forum (so you get views from both sides!)

Hold your horses, pard'ner
You may want to wait just one more month, before plunging into a new camera system.
PMA, the big show way out west, in Las Vegas, takes place on March 6-11 and might just introduce new cameras and lenses that you may find quite interesting and applicable to your need.
You may find jumping-the-gun into the D80 or the EOS 30D was a major mistake. Of course, I suppose you could always push it and take it back before 30-days have rolled by.
But, will this prospect looming on the horizon, unless you get one hell of a deal or have a "shoot" that simply cannot wait, rushing headlong into any system, at this point, might be condered ... unwise.

See this thread also.

But I'm following Don's advice. However the wait is killing me but no "must" shoots between now and then and I still have my S3.

Thank you
I didn't see the other posts before I added mine. Thanks for the links.
I still did not see where an in the lens stabilization made a differance though. Maybe I should be looking at a lens thread instead of a camera thread?
Thanks for the links though. Wow... nothing is easy these days.
Well, I will probably wait too. Nuts...
The year end bonus is here now but will it be in a few months? Easy come, easy go.

Are you coming down Don?

Here a thread as to how some of us are approaching the decision. See the second last post.

Man, I wish I could! You are the third one to ask me this. But with college, work and my son's Eagle Scout aspirations all happening this Semester ... I can't leave. I agree that it sure does sound like a dandy time for those who do go.
Do me a favor, TNB, if they have a "major-league"-looking babe at the Canon booth ... take an image and post it here. As much leg as she'll show. If it is just a couple of slugs, I may wind up selling all my Canon stuff. I don't deal with that kind of disappointment very well.
Can you imagine, flying all the way to Vegas!, braving the masses ... and then winding up talking to a couple of geeky-looking Canon dudes? Oh dear Lord, where's the desert?
Anyway, grab all the freebies you can... and post 'em. Oh, and drop my name in the door-prize raffle. Let me know if I get picked for the:
- Canon EOS-1Ds MKII

or the
- Canon EF 400mm f/2.8L IS USM

(the heaviest lens award - 11.8 lbs.)
give-away. Then, I will hop a jet and make my way there. I just love prize-winning. If it winds up being a Canon S3-IS, though, tell them to "keep it" ... I had one ... and wouldn't even drive across town for a free one.
Whatever ... let me know how it goes. Should be an awesome show, this time.
