    Photographing Las Vegas

My wife and I will be going to Las Vegas soon. I wouldn't dream of not taking the new Pentax K100d. Does anyone have some suggestions for where to go for good picture taking? Sure the strip is obvious, but I am also intrested in surrounding areas.

Also does anyone use a monopod? It seems as it would would be a tad bit less cumbersome, not to mention quicker and easier, than a tripod?

Red Rock Canyon, Mount Charleston, Las Vegas Marina, Hoover Dam, Ethyl M's Chocolate Factory, LV Motor Speedway, and don't forget places like the Stratosphere and Fremont Experience (downtown instead of on the strip). Numerous places won't allow tripods, i.e. Fashion Show and the top of the Stratosphere. Myself, I try to stay with F/2.8 glass so I don't need to use either a tripod or monopod. Depending on when you arrive, there may also be ongoing events. Myself, I'll probably revist the Bellagio and Lake Las Vegas for the Chinese New Year celebrations. If you want a few more ideas or to see a few photos of the places mentioned, visit my website.

Thank for the suggestions. As for glass I am and will be stuck with the kit lense for the foreseeable future.

Do you have time for a "side-trip"?

If your stay in Las Vegas is long enough for a side trip, here are my suggestions: Death Valley National Park (150 miles), Grand Canyon (300 miles) or Sedona, AZ (300 miles).

Watch for good night scenes there...

Here's the spectacular Bellagio fountain display after dark, at 1/6 second:

Or, reflections off the water, same place, shutterspeed:

Inside the Bellagio, there's a Dale Chihuly ceiling that offers opportunities:

You just have to keep your camera ready everywhere you go.

The current Bellagio garden theme is the Chinese New Year and there is a large horse under that particular ceiling. Another nice place to view the fountains is from ontop of the "mini" Effiel Tower at the Paris. Other current event attractions are the Miss America Pagent.

This handheld non-flash photo is from last night--capturing the water in midstream. There are a lot more area photos on my website.

It appears that part of the tower is "missing".
