CANON 75-300 LENS Check up

I bought a secondhand Canon Rebel 300D, with it came
various lenses, 50mm-1.8 & 28-135 & a 18-55, and a 75-300 1.4.5.6
there is nothing else on the lens to say if its USM or IS
I'm not sure if this lens is really what I should have, I was advised before I started buying a camera and lens I should have a 28-135 and a 70-300.
My question is should I be looking to sell the 75-300 and buy a 70-300.

My hobby I hope is going to be directed to Wildlife and Full size Aircraft at Shows, with the odd family shots.

Well the only lens on that list I know has IS and USM is the 28-135mm 3.5-5.6 IS lens wich should have a switch on the lens to turn IS on and off. You would want to turn it off while it is on a tripod. It should say USM on it too.

I know your 50 and 18-55 are not USM not sure about the last one. You can see every lens Canon makes here http://www.usa.canon.com/consumer/co...categoryid=149

Well as I said I was advised by a friend to get those lenes, I have no reason myself as I haven't even taken one photo as yet, thats to happen at Christmas hopefully. I jusr thought I would ask and see what other people\had to say

Well I would try to get a reason out of your friend. I don't get it because you are doubling up your focal range. If you don't have the camera yet how do you know it doesn't say USM or IS on it, and just for the record it would say "image stabalization" and "ultrasonic" like so.... http://www.usa.canon.com/consumer/co...9&modelid=7337

I haven't used either but if you already bought it, I would suggest taking some pictures and find out what you like, and don't like, THEN make a dissision based on what YOU want not what other people think you should have. Just my take.

From what you posted in your first post, that lens does not have USM or IS. I've used it but for a lot of things but I find it too slow to focus in most sports. I'm getting rid of it for the 70-300 IS which I'll hopefully get by spring.

If there's an extra switch on the side for image stabilization, then it's IS. The lens will also have a gold stripe around it if it's USM.

Not to hijack, but the reason I went with the 28-135 was with my other lens, 50 1.8 and 70-300 IS, I found what I saw as a "hole" in there. The 28-135 was for the money a nice fill-stays on the camera most of the time, gives good short range to medium telephoto use and general all around use.
The 70-300 gets used mostly for outdoor wildlife, short range birding, etc. The 50 1.8 gets used for low light stuff.
Yes it is " doubling up on the focal range" but seems to me a fair trade off.

It seems you have a good range of lens already that came with the camera

I agree with the other opinoins that maybe use what you have and see what you like and don't like, then make a practical decision as to what to keep, trade or buy to fit your particular style.
