I wouldn't know . . . I know I've read about plenty of people having this problem. I've also ready about plenty of happy customers who have not had this problem. I've inspected the lens, very clean upon arrival. Nothing visible inside. I do see how dust would enter though. When focusing, the inside part of the lens (the one that is on the mount side) retracts when the lens is extended to full tele. So, whatever dust is in your camera appears to have potential of entering the lens. What sort of real problem will that pose, you got me? I know every lens I've bought had dust inside of it when it arrived and blemishes in(on) the lens' glass too. did it ever effect anything, nope. But, as for this lens, I haven't used it enough to comment on the real world possibilities of this becoming a problem. What I do know is that if this lens is for me exactly what I hope it will be, I'll have no problem sending it in for annual cleanings if its required. But, my money says it won't be a problem.

    ShwiiiNG!

I also seriously considered this. Figured I'd have to sell the 24-105 and didn't want to forfit the tele. Still; I'll probably go back to wanting it if you start posting your usual.

Glad all that budgeting's going to good use.

(how do you sleep)? Bet you're up all night XMAS-eve looking for Santa!

I'm most likely going to keep my 28-105 for those indoor shots that require more reach than my 85 - and I still need the flexibility of a zoom . . . As for now I'm going to be dumping most everything else. . . I want to end up with my 30D, 17-55, 50 1.4, 85 1.8, and probably the 70-300 IS. . . But, I might not have much use for the 50 1.4 . . . In my experiences with the 50 1.4 the only advantages of going to 1.4 is when I needed to get SS that are hand holdable, and to be honest, I haven't been pleased with the trade off of DOF for SS. IS seems to solve that issue nicely. I know IS won't freeze action, but 1/50 won't either and the razor thin DOF isn't always practical.

You realize, of course, that posting some shots from this baby is mandatory.

congrats man! i know you're gonna do some interesting things with that lens. as for dust, it might be a slight problem with picky buyers if you sell it some day but i have a ton of dust in my old 50 f1.8, and a little in just about all of my lenses but it has no effect on my images as far as i can tell. probably no different than the effects of few specks of dust on the surface of the front and rear elements of a lens that i'm sure we all have.

i'm surprised though, i thought the 70-200 IS was going to your next lens cuz it seems you've been wanting that one for the longest time

You're right. I have been wanting that lens too. But - I'll have to hold off on that one for a little while longer - I can't get that lens unless photography pays for it. Thats a promise I made to myself. The 70-300 IS should see me through just fine. . . I can be more creative with this 17-55. Thanks ReF!
