    I've seen the light. . .

I had a very interesting and educational experience this past weekend. I finally got fed up with the ambient light I find in people's homes and I threw on my 550EX, everyone else be damned! I found myself at my GF's nephew's 1st birthday bonanza. In the past I'd get heckled because of how annoying some people find my flash when it goes off every 10 seconds. This time I was pretty much screwed with lighting and sick and tired of putting up with it and with ISO 1600. So, prepare yourself Jamie, I grabbed my 28-105, turn my flash on, shot in M. Set my SS to 1/200 or there abouts, AV set to 5.6, ISO set to 800 (for AA reasons, I only had one set charged with me). Off I went. What did I learn. I'm not going back to ambient anytime soon for kid shots. Screw that! I'm not all that educated when it comes to flash photography, but I think my results were damn good for my skill level and the 28-105. shooting at or near 105mm mostly. These images are cropped, some more than others, and edited as well. But, I still feel they show how well the 550 and 28-105 performed for me in this situation.

    That facial expression is fantastic.

Good flash technique looks fine, it's just an annoyance factor. It's why I rented a 35L, last christmas the complaning over flash use got pretty bad (think a drunk smuck infering I'lll eat the flash if it goes off again)

Love the glint in #3 but the last one is just a too-cool capture. Nice job.

Now; get one of those milk cartons to put over the flash.
    Thanks Vich. Milk cartons?

I hear ya Tim. . . but, after seeing my results and keeper rate just go through the roof with the flash, I'm using it from here on out. At least right up until the point they hit it with a hammer - although, I've just made a DVD slide show that might just impress them enough to let me continue with my flash. . .

I saw some of my best images straight out of the camera this past Saturday, not trying to brag or anything, suffice it to say I was thoroughly impressed with the over quality. I haven't used my flash that much really. that's gonna change.

That last one is a classic. You're spot-on with the flash - makes a huge difference for this sort of thing.

Although I have to wonder why people are so sensitive? It's your nephew's birthday party for FFS!

Did you use any diffuser? My main complaint about using flash is that my subjects often have their eyes closed or half closed due to the dang bright light. It seems you don't have that problem with your pictures. Nice job!

Thanks Christian. I found that most commonly, +1/3 was almost right - in some cases +2/3 would have been best.

I know what you mean about the flash sensitivity. But, after this, I don't care what they think about it - its all about numero uno from here on out. I think I'll gladly take the label as the annoying light flasher guy.

In my experience +2/3 is needed a lot too.
