Thanks Core.. I really do love this camera!

I'm hoping to go to the local zoo soon so there should be loads of different things to shoot!! and they have a Bald Eagle that I've adopted so I really want to get some shots of him.

Tell me about it! Tonight was the first time I used the camera indoors properly. It was a childs birthday party, and the shots I took were pretty awful. I don't know what I was doing wrong though! Was using Program mode for some, with ISO 400 mostly when not using the flash. Then I tried portrait mode, which were slightly better, and SP mode in the 'party' setting which were bad also. The main problem was over exposure. When I took a shot of just 1 kid, their face appeared beaming in the pics. A lot of pics appeared blurry (when there was movement) and in one picture, even though I focused it properly, it came out very unfocused! (The girl and her mum photo)

Please point out what I'm doing wrong!

    Hey ProPhecy,

-Not sure what happened on the 1st pic but you didn't get focus lock.
-The second one I think would have been ok if you had been further away. The flash is reflecting on the foreground objects and blowing the highlights. You might be able to save it in photoshop.
-The 3rd shot the shutter speed was too low. Even at 1600 you would need to be well over 1/60 to even have a chance with a young child.
    - Same goes for the 4th.

Have you tried the FD feature? It does actually work if the subject is facing you. I would not give up on Portrait mode either, it actually is one of the more useful scene modes. Also, if you want to use the flash more but find it too strong you can adjust the flash output in the menu somewhere or you can diffuse the flash with some tape.

If you shoot RAW you can correct blown highlights pretty easily using the fine pix software or with photoshop. If shooting jpg I would consider lowering the EV a bit, probably -1/3 for most outdoor shots. Indoors jpg should work fine.

I believe if you go back a few pages in this thread there are some settings recommendations too.

    Good luck and keep shooting!
    Paul

    Greetings From San Diego!!!

First off, great stuff people. I am so proud of this thread.

Secondly, props to the La Quinta Inn here in San Diego for having free wireless internet access even though according to my travel agent they didn't have anything other than dial-up access.

Spent the day at the zoo with my family and had a couple of good shots which I hope my PP can do justice for. I did it "P_Schneider"-style (my own nickname for shooting all RAW ) but if I don't get off the computer in 5 minutes my wife'll kill me since we're on vacay, so that will have to wait til I return to homebase. I was able to sneak in one quick Lightroom workflow:

Not the greatest, though I hope the rest can only turn out better.

    See you guys soon!

Thanks P Schneider, apart from the party photos in low lighting, the rest turned out excellently. I'll just have to work on indoor shots...!
