shop around regardless of sale... I know that isn't what you were looking for necessarily, but around here, that is pretty much the most expensive place to buy equipment, and online they don't seem much/any better.
Don't have any experience with lenses in that price range - or I would try to help there.
Nikon D70s
Nikkor 50mm 1.8D (If you don't have it you need it)
Nikkor 18-200mm VR II
SB-600
Bogen/Manfrotto Tripods/Heads
NAS (D300, Nikkor 80-200mm (or 70-200mm)f/2.8, Tamron 90mm Macro)

I came across this site while fiddling around. The price seems to be right on a lot of their stuff.

What will you need the lens for? Thats very important when deciding on a zoom lens. Sports, nature.....?

A 10-20 is a zoom lens so is a 18-55 or 18-70 or 50-150 or 70-200 or a 150-500.
You need to be a little more specific about what you want to shoot with the lens.

mainly nature thats what i mostly shoot.
i want a 70-300mm lens.

Well, some may say to do a search, others will jump out and say to get the Sigma 70-300, but it has to be the APO, not the regular one.
Some may say that if you can find it, get the 18-200 VR and call it a day.
I went with the Tamron 70-300 and am fairly happy with it. Its nice when there is good lighting, but if the clouds start rolling in and you plan on doing any action shots with it, fa-ghet-a-bat-it. But thats the downfall to all the consumer 70-300 lenses that have 4-5.6 apaetures. If you go with the more expensive "pro" lenses with a constant 2.8 apaeture, then you will fair better off. But those will cost significantly more.

beware of bestbuy electronics always check in www.bizrate.com and www.resellerratings.com for an online retailer
Well a good lens is the Nikkor 70-300mm AF-D ED ! some other users like Sigma 70-300mm AF APO DG Macro (not real macro it is a close up lens.. macro lenses go to 1:1, this lens goes 1:2 which is close up)

Ditto on the Tamron lense. I've got it too and it takes a good picture. But yeah, the small apeture kills you when the sun starts going down. But all during the day, you can blaze away.
It has a very good Macro as well. Its a damn good entry level zoom lense.

IMO, I would save up a little more money and get the new Nikkor 70-300 f/4-5.6 VR that is coming out. Its around 500$ I think, don't know if its out yet, maybe it could be asked for Christmas or your money could be saved up until Christmas.
