Adorama, B&H, et al have it listed as coming in at $1600US.

I could never afford photography if I was Australian...not that the 50 1/2L is even remotely affordable for me anyway.

OK, so that's about USD50 in shipping so total of USD1650. That's around AUD2250 given current exchange rates and local sundry charges, add 10% GST gives AUD2500 in rough numbers.

Hmmmm, maybe the local price isn't that bad after all. It is Canon's list so one could expect the 'street' price to be AUD2500 or maybe even better.

I see the 85mm f/1.2 L II USM is now USD1,800 from the USD2200 on release a few months ago, maybe the 50 will follow suit?

I've seen a few 1.2s and none were anything impressive. But it wasn't exactly in the hands of the likes of CW or Jamie either so that's a pretty major factor. If I could find them again I'd refer you.
