I think you're right. The first one was too boring since it was a lonely star. But the 2nd one with the xmas lights as a background pops the subject even more.
Fiasco, I have a shot of the full xmas tree. I'll try and post it up sometime later today.
Rooz, awesome panning! I haven't had much luck capturing those suckers in Central Park. Hopefully when spring comes, a gazillion of them will start swarming the pond area again.

I just recently upgraded to a D90 (Merry Christmas me!), and have ton of Photography equipment on the list to come from other people. Can't wait to dive into doing photography more next year, as i've made it a goal to really improve.

Updated the image with some recommendations from K1W1. Also, Color Profiles turned on in Firefox makes things look so much better.

Try rotating the image slightly anti clockwise so that the tower is vertical.
