Thank you very much! Your explanations are perfect. I did not realise that I had the Exposure Compensation on. I admit that it's all still pretty new so I often forget things (i.e the EC).

Question like that, you say that you do not use the EC, I admit that on a day like yesterday, I had no reason to use it, but in a situation that the flash is needed, but it's still not enough, what do you do? I don't know if you understand my question, but hopefully you do...

Also, what is the difference between the flash compensation and the exposure compensation?

Flash exposure compensation (FEC) is used only when you are using the flash. It controls the brightness of the flash. Exposure compensation (EC) adjusts the shutter speed and/or aperture, to make the exposure brighter or darker than it would otherwise be. I just keep my settings on manual all the time and change the shutter speed and aperture myself.

So if it was rather dark, first I would use the longest shutter speed I could. Then I'd open the aperture. Then I'd bump the ISO. Then, if it still wasn't enough, I'd use the flash in addition to those settings, and dial in FEC to get the right amount of flash. I hope that makes sense ...

P.S. That example is for a situation when I primarily wanted the scene to be lit by ambient light, not my flash. Using flash as the main light source is a whole different topic

On aperture priority, exposure compensation adjusts the shutter speed only. It is very accurate and much faster than guessing shutter speeds, IMO.

Makes sense to me, but I would like to see a pretty sweet tutorial on FEC.

Maybe I used the wrong words the light ring is a ring flash attached to the end of the lens. I find it helps me reduce hot spots. I am really a novice at this so it takes 5 or 6 shots to get a decent one. Thanks for the compliment.

Any D80 owners have the MB-D80 Battery grip?
If so, how long do 6 AA (Eneloops @ 2000mah) last if you have tried?

I have the MB-D80 grip, but I use 2 Nikon EN-EL3e batteries in it. Tried running on AA's once, (1.2V 2100mah), but they didn't even make it through a 2-hour shoot. The EN-EL3e's keep me going for days between charges. The AA's now power my 2 SB-600 flashes.
