Unfortunately your kid(s) are a little young. Any nephews or nieces who play sport?

Basically go to wherever they play and shoot thousands of photos.
Use shutter priority around 1/400 or 1/500 sec is usually okay 1/320 works for slower games or younger kids.
Spend the whole game looking through the viewfinder.
Use centre focus and keep the action in the centre of the viewfinder.
Use a wider focal length rather than a tight one otherwise you will end up with half of peoples heads or nothing below the kneecap.
Get home download the 150 or so shots from the game to that software I can't mention and quickly go through and flag the maybes (in my case usually 25-30% but I always keep to many).
Go back through the images again and crop them to make them work.
BTW. I've gone back to shooting sports in jpeg, I'm not trying to win any quality awards here.
It's easy - as long as you have a reason to be at the sports ground. A single guy with a big lens at childrens sports is a problem these days.

Sad so this is just not only an American issue Shame how many social ills are effecting photography these days.
I thought about who I am... and realized I was an
    unformed, unreconciled imagery, without "GOD"

    NikonD?
    and some other Nikon stuff
